💷 Why Can Two Sets of Darts Cost So Differently?
At first glance, two darts can look pretty similar.
But there are actually loads of things that can affect the price of a set.
From the materials used to the complexity of the barrel, coatings, branding and even the player whose name is attached to them.
So let’s start with one of the biggest…
🔩 1. Tungsten Percentage
You’ve probably seen numbers like:
80% Tungsten, 90% Tungsten, 95% Tungsten
But what does that actually mean?
Tungsten is an incredibly dense material, which allows manufacturers to create heavier darts without making the barrel excessively thick.
Generally, a higher tungsten percentage allows a barrel to be made slimmer while maintaining the same weight.
That’s one reason you’ll often find higher tungsten percentages on more expensive darts.
But here’s the important bit…
👉 Higher tungsten doesn’t automatically mean better darts.
A 95% tungsten set isn’t automatically going to perform better than a 90% set.
If you prefer the shape and feel of the 90% barrel…
That’s the better dart for you.
⚙️ 2. More Complicated Machining
This is where things can start getting expensive.
Look closely at some premium darts and you’ll see just how complicated modern barrel designs have become.
You’ve got:
• Ring grips
• Knurling
• Scallops
• Axial cuts
• Multiple grip zones
• Intricate milling
• Different depths and patterns
Compare that with a relatively simple straight barrel with a basic ring grip.
The more complicated the design, the more work can be involved in manufacturing it.
That additional machining can increase the cost considerably.
And while some of these designs look incredible…
Again…
More complicated doesn’t always mean better.
Some players prefer surprisingly simple barrels. 🎯
🎨 3. Coatings & Finishes
Black, Gold, Rainbow, Titanium, PVD...
Modern darts come in just about every finish imaginable.
And some look seriously good. 🔥
Premium coatings can add another stage to the manufacturing process and can also help protect the finish of the barrel.
But does a fancy coating suddenly make you hit more 180s?
Unfortunately not. 😂
You’re paying for the looks.
And there’s nothing wrong with that!
👤 4. Player Licensing
Luke Littler, Michael van Gerwen, Luke Humphries, Gerwyn Price, Stephen Bunting...
Some of the biggest players in the world have their own signature darts.
And naturally…
Those names carry value.
When you buy a professional player’s darts, you’re not necessarily paying purely for tungsten and machining.
You’re also buying into that player’s brand and signature setup.
But buying the exact darts your favourite player uses doesn’t mean you’ll suddenly throw like them.
If only it were that easy… 😂
📦 5. Branding & Packaging
Sometimes you’re paying for more than the three barrels.
Premium packaging, Special cases, Extra accessories, Limited-edition boxes, Unique presentation...
All of these things cost money to produce.
Some brands also simply position themselves towards the premium end of the market.
Just like trainers, watches or pretty much anything else…
The name on the box can influence the price.
🧪 6. Research, Development & Technology
Modern darts can involve a surprising amount of development.
Manufacturers experiment with:
• Different barrel profiles
• New grip patterns
• Weight distribution
• Balance points
• Coatings
• Materials
• Manufacturing techniques
A completely new barrel design may go through several prototypes before the finished product ever reaches a shop.
That development costs money.
And with some of the more unusual darts on the market…
You can definitely see where it went. 👀
🤔 So… Are Expensive Darts Actually Better?
Here’s the big question.
And the answer is…
Not necessarily.
A £120 set of darts could feature incredible machining, premium tungsten and a beautiful coating.
But if they’re:
Too grippy… too smooth… too long… too short… or simply the wrong shape for the way you hold your darts…
None of that matters.
Meanwhile, you could pick up a £40 set that fits your hand perfectly and wonder where they’ve been all your life.
That’s because price can’t tell you whether a dart will suit your throw.
The best darts are the darts that suit YOU. 🎯
