šŸŽÆ Missing Left & Right? Here’s Why

Mystery Darts

We've all been there...

You’re aiming straight at the treble 20.

The throw feels good...Ā The release feels clean.

And then… THUD.

Your dart lands in the 5.

Next dart?

Straight into the 1. 😭

Before you start blaming your darts, the board, the lighting, or the person talking behind you… there’s usually a reason your darts keep drifting left or right.

And surprisingly, it isn’t always your aim.

Here are some of the most common reasons your darts keep missing sideways — and what you can do about it.

šŸŽÆ 1. Your Release Isn’t Consistent

You can have the perfect stance, the perfect darts and the perfect aiming point…

But if the dart leaves your fingers slightly differently each time, it’s going somewhere different.

Releasing the dart slightly early can send it one way.

Holding onto it slightly too long can send it the other.

Try focusing less on where the dart lands and more on making your throwing motion and release feel identical every time.

Consistency beats perfection.

āœ‹ 2. You’re Gripping The Dart Too Tightly

It’s easy to think:

ā€œIf I hold the dart tighter, I’ll have more control.ā€

Not necessarily.

A tight grip can actually make it harder to release the dart smoothly.

Instead of the barrel naturally leaving your fingers, you can end up dragging, pulling or pushing the dart during the release.

And that tiny movement can be the difference between…

Treble 20… and a lovely visit to theĀ 5 bed. šŸ˜‚

Your grip should feel secure enough that the dart doesn’t move in your hand, but relaxed enough that it can leave your fingers cleanly.

āš™ļø 2. More Complicated Machining

This is where things can start getting expensive.

Look closely at some premium darts and you’ll see just how complicated modern barrel designs have become.

You’ve got:

• Ring grips
• Knurling
• Scallops
• Axial cuts
• Multiple grip zones
• Intricate milling
• Different depths and patterns

Compare that with a relatively simple straight barrel with a basic ring grip.

The more complicated the design, the more work can be involved in manufacturing it.
That additional machining can increase the cost considerably.

And while some of these designs look incredible…

Again…

More complicated doesn’t always mean better.

Some players prefer surprisingly simple barrels. šŸŽÆ

šŸ§ 3. Your Body & Alignment Are Off

Watch most professional darts players from the side and you’ll notice something.

Very little moves.

Their feet stay planted, their body remains stable, their head stays relatively still.

And most of the movement comes from the throwing arm.

If your shoulder, torso or head moves sideways during your throw, your arm can follow it.

But your position at the oche matters too.

Everyone stands differently...Ā Some players stand square, some stand side-on, some line their dominant eye directly with the target.

There isn’t one stance that works for everyone.

The important thing is finding a position where your eye, arm and target naturally line up.

If you’re constantly grouping darts to the same side of the target, try making a very small adjustment to your position at the oche.

Not half a metre..Ā We’re talking centimetres.

šŸŽÆ 4. Your Darts Might Not Suit Your Throw

Now things get interesting…

Because sometimes it can actually be the darts.

Different barrel shapes, grip positions, weights and balance points can all affect how naturally a dart sits in your hand and leaves your fingers.

For example, if you naturally grip towards the front of the barrel but you’re using a dart designed around a pronounced rear grip section, it might never feel completely comfortable.

Things like:

- Barrel shape
- Grip level
- Weight
- Balance
- Stem length
- Flight shape

…can all change how a dart behaves.

That doesn’t mean buying more expensive darts will magically fix your throw.

It means finding darts that suit YOU can make consistency easier.

And sometimes you don’t realise how much better another setup feels until you actually try one.

🧠 5. You’re Trying Too Hard To Fix It

You throw into the 5...Ā So you compensate slightly right.
Then you land in the 1...Ā You adjust left.... 5 again!

You change your stance, change your grip, move your thumb, change your throw...

And 10 minutes later…

You’ve forgotten how you normally throw altogether. šŸ˜‚

This is one of the easiest traps to fall into.

When something isn’t working, our instinct is to start changing things.

But changing five things at once makes it almost impossible to work out what the actual problem was.

Instead, change one thing at a time.

Give yourself enough throws to properly test it.

Then decide whether it helped!

šŸ” Left, Right… Or Both?

Your miss pattern can sometimes give you a clue.

šŸŽÆ Constantly missing to ONE side?

Look at your alignment, stance and whether you’re pushing or pulling the dart during release.

ā†”ļø Missing BOTH left and right?

Consistency is more likely to be the issue — particularly your release or grip.

šŸ“ Grouping tightly… just in the wrong place?

That’s actually good news.

Your throw may already be consistent.

A small alignment adjustment could be all that’s needed.

šŸŽÆ The Most Important Thing?

Don’t chase every bad dart.

Even the best players in the world throw into the 5 and 1.

The goal isn’t to create a throw that never misses.

It’s to create a throw that’s repeatable enough that your misses become smaller and your good darts become more frequent.

Your stance...Ā Your grip...Ā Your release...Ā Your equipment.

They all play a part.

But ultimately, there isn’t one perfect way to throw a dart.

There’s only the setup and technique that works best for you.

šŸŽ Could Your Next Set Suit You Better?

Sometimes experimenting with a completely different barrel shape, grip or balance is exactly what helps you discover what feels right.

And that’s a big part of what Mystery Darts is all about.

Choose your weight and we’ll send you a premium set you may never have thought to try yourself.

A different grip.

A different shape.

A completely different feel.

Who knows…

Your next favourite set could be the one you never would’ve picked. šŸ‘€
