🎭 The Biggest Characters Darts Has Ever Seen

Mystery Darts

Darts has never just been about hitting treble 20s.

It’s the walk-ons.

The celebrations.

The rivalries.

The outfits.

And, perhaps most importantly…

The characters. 🎯

Some players could have walked onto a stage without throwing a single dart and still had the crowd talking.

From gold jewellery and Hawaiian shirts to colourful mohawks and enormous celebrations, darts has produced personalities unlike almost any other sport.

So, let’s take a look at some of the biggest characters ever to step up to the oche.

👑 1. Bobby George — The King of Bling

There was only one place we could start.

Bobby George.

Long before elaborate walk-ons became a huge part of professional darts, Bobby understood that darts was supposed to be entertainment.

Gold jewellery.
A crown.
A cape.
And even a candelabra.

His larger-than-life entrances helped turn a darts match into a show, while his personality made him one of the sport’s most recognisable figures.

George was also a serious player, reaching two BDO World Championship finals, in 1980 and 1994.

But trophies only tell part of his story.

Bobby showed that a darts player could be more than a darts player.

They could be an entertainer.

And plenty have followed that blueprint since.

🐍 2. Peter Wright — Snakebite

If you’ve watched darts at any point over the last decade, you’ll recognise Peter Wright.

You might just struggle to recognise him twice. 😂

Different hair.
Different colours.
Different trousers.
And quite often… Different darts.

Wright turned every appearance into an event, with his trademark colourful mohawk and Snakebite persona becoming instantly recognisable.

And underneath all of that personality is an incredible player.

He’s won the PDC World Championship twice.

Perhaps the most Peter Wright thing of all, though, is his willingness to experiment with his equipment.

New barrels, new setups, new colours.

For most players, changing darts before a massive match sounds terrifying.

For Snakebite?

Just another day at the office. 🎯

🌺 3. Wayne Mardle — Hawaii 501

Bright Hawaiian shirt? Check ✅

Dancing? Check ✅

Crowd completely involved? Absolutely ✅

Wayne Mardle was built for the big stage.

His nickname “Hawaii 501” came from the Hawaiian shirts he began wearing in the late 1990s, combined with the classic starting score of 501. His crowd interaction and on-stage antics helped make him one of the circuit’s most popular players.

And that personality hasn’t disappeared since he stopped competing at the highest level.

Mardle became one of the most recognisable voices around modern darts.

For an entire generation of fans, it’s almost impossible to separate Wayne Mardle from the atmosphere of a huge darts night.

That takes some doing.

😤 4. Gerwyn Price — The Iceman

You hear the roar.
You see the fist pump.
You already know who it is.

Gerwyn Price.

Price brought an intensity to the oche that made him impossible to ignore.

The former professional rugby player has become known for huge celebrations, emotion and an ultra-competitive stage presence.

Some fans love it.... others would rather he toned it down.

But that’s exactly why he belongs on this list.

People have an opinion.

And when Price is involved in a big match, there always seems to be an extra bit of edge in the atmosphere.

Behind all of that emotion is a world-class darts player too — Price became PDC World Champion in 2021.

Whatever you think of his celebrations…

Darts would certainly be quieter without him. 😂

😎 5. Eric Bristow — The Crafty Cockney

Before many of today’s biggest personalities had even picked up a dart…

There was Eric Bristow.

Confidence wasn’t exactly in short supply.

Bristow played with swagger, wound up opponents and developed a love-hate relationship with crowds — all while becoming the dominant player of his era.

And he could certainly back it up.

Five World Championships.

Five World Masters titles.

He was also one of the founding players of the PDC in 1993.

The BBC described Bristow as a player who helped transform darts from a pub game and raise its profile with his unmistakable personality.

You could cheer him.
You could boo him.

Bristow didn’t seem particularly bothered either way.

The Crafty Cockney had arrived.

🕺 6. Dimitri Van den Bergh — The DreamMaker

There aren’t many darts players who can turn their walk-on into a dance routine.

Dimitri Van den Bergh can.

And he absolutely commits to it. 😂

The Belgian’s dancing entrances have become part of his identity, helping make him instantly recognisable before he’s even thrown a dart.

But don’t let the dancing fool you.

Once the music stops, Dimitri can be seriously dangerous.

He’s combined big-stage personality with major success, including winning the World Matchplay.

From dancing his way onto the stage…

To suddenly looking completely locked in at the oche.

That’s the DreamMaker.

🎯 What Makes A Great Darts Character?

Here’s the interesting part.

They don’t all have to be loud.

They don’t all need crazy hair.

And they definitely don’t all need a crown and candelabra. 👑😂

A great darts personality just needs something that makes you think:

“I want to watch this person play.”

It could be a walk-on.
A celebration.
A nickname.
An outfit.
A rivalry.
Or simply the way they carry themselves on stage.

Because when two players step up to the oche, we’re not just watching numbers disappear from 501.

We’re watching people.

And the characters are a huge part of what makes darts… darts.
